Our team on Denali continues to make progress up the mountain. Yesterday, they cached gear at 13,500 feet near the Windy Corner, a notoriously icy and exposed area. Today, the team will move to a 14,000-foot camp, a massive milestone on their way to the 18,000-foot (5500-meter) summit of Denali.
Our lead guide, Dallas, reported that the team is doing excellent, and they enjoyed their rest after caching their gear. All eyes are on the weather, with hopes for continued sunshine and low winds. As we know, though, that’s up to the mountain to decide!
Here are a few fun Denali facts:
- Denali is the farthest north of the Seven Summits, at 63 degrees north latitude
- In mid-summer on Denali, it is always light, so you won’t need a headlamp
- In winter, Denali is one of the coldest places on earth
- The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for approximately $7.2 million, equivalent to approximately two cents per acre
